I've been wanting to talk about this, since I started blogging. At the end of a long day is there a better way to relax than laying on your couch with a blanket, watching your favorite series and snacking? I don't think so. Literally one of the first questions I ask someone is "What series are you watching?". It surely makes for a great conversation starter. Over the years I have watched a satisfying amount of series that allows me to suggest to you my top picks. Let's take a look, shall we? Of course I organized the list alphabetically.
American Gods Drama, Fantasy, Mystery (2017-)
When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he enters a world he doesn't understand and meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. Left adrift by the recent death of his wife, Shadow is hired as Mr. Wednesday's assistant/bodyguard. He finds himself in a hidden world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, including Technology and Media. In a grand plan to combat the threat, Mr. Wednesday attempts to unite the Old Gods to defend their existence and rebuild the influence that they've lost, leaving Shadow struggling to accept this new world and his place in it.
American Horror Story Drama, Horror, Thriller (2011-)
An anthology series centering on different characters and locations, including a house with a murderous past, an insane asylum, a witch coven, a freak show, a hotel, a possessed farmhouse, a cult, and the apocalypse. I haven't watched every season, just cause I am too scared to watch it alone. Season 3, the witch coven was the best in my opinion. Jessica Lange is my favorite, she makes any villain look good.
Big Bang Theory Comedy, Romance (2007-)
A group of scientists, geniuses in the laboratory but socially challenged everywhere else, meet beautiful, street-smart neighbor Penny, who aims to teach them a thing or two about life. I find it to be hilarious. I still don't know who is my favorite character, Sheldon or Howard?
Big Little Lies Crime, Drama, Mystery (2017-)
The apparently perfect lives of three mothers of first graders unravel to the point of murder. The casting ,the music the scenes are all so great. I definitely recommend.
Blacklist Crime, Drama, Mystery (2013-)
A new FBI profiler, Elizabeth Keen, has her entire life uprooted when a mysterious criminal, Raymond Reddington, who has eluded capture for decades, turns himself in and insists on speaking only to her. He has a list of the most dangerous criminals in the world that he has compiled over the years and is willing to inform on their operations in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Just good old solving crimes and manhunt.
Carrie Diaries Comedy, Romance (2013-2014)
Carrie Bradshaw is a high-school student in the early 1980s, who lives in Castleberry, Connecticut. Carrie is followed through high-school starting her junior year, continuing through the summer, and ending at senior year graduation. Carrie, her friends, and family are shown going through many different trials during this time. It's not bad, it's just something to pass your time.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Drama, Fantasy, Horror (2018-)
I bet you all know Sabrina, the teenage witch. As her 16th birthday nears, Sabrina must choose between the witch world of her family and the human world of her friends. Is supergreat a word?
Dynasty Drama (2017-)
Oh I love me some drama. It's actually the remake of the 1980s Dynasty series, with a twist. Follows two of America's wealthiest families as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. Cannot stress how good this is. If you like the drama, you will like this.
Elementary Crime, Drama, Mystery (2012-)
Plain and simple, a modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, with the detective now living in New York City. Also Dr. Watson is Lucy Liu and she is great.
Friends Comedy, Romance (1994-2004)
There we go. It's only the best series ever. Follows the personal and professional lives of six twenty to thirty-something-year-old friends living in Manhattan. I have watched it like a million times and I will probably watch it again soon. Even though it's 24 years old (that makes two of us) it will always be relevant. Chandler's jokes will always crack me up. Yeap, that good!
Game of Thrones Action, Adventure, Drama (2011-)
Nine noble families fight for control over the mythical lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for thousands of years. It's a great series, blockbuster. Totally unpredictable plots, leaves you hanging until the next episode. The only thing that is not great is that you have to wait 1-2 years for the next season...Why GOT people, why?
Girlboss Comedy (2017)
Sophia, a misfit, discovers a passion for fashion, becoming an unlikely businesswoman in the process. As her business grows, however, she has to learn to cope with life as her own boss. This show is loosely based on the true story of Nasty Gal Founder, Sophia Amoruso. Unfortunately the show was cancelled after only one season.
Good Place Comedy, Drama, Fantasy (2016-)
The series focuses on Eleanor Shellstrop, a woman who wakes up in the afterlife and is introduced by Michael the architect to "The Good Place", a highly selective Heaven-like utopia he designed, as a reward for her righteous life. She realizes that she was sent there by mistake and must hide her morally imperfect behavior and try to become a better, more ethical person. Again super-good, couldn't resist binge-watching it.
Good Wife Crime, Drama, Mystery (2009-2016)
Alicia has been a good wife to her husband, a former state's attorney. After a very humiliating sex and corruption scandal, he is behind bars. She must now provide for her family and returns to work as a litigator in a law firm. If you're into crime & law series, you will like this one.
Gossip Girl Drama, Romance (2007-2012)
Privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York can hide no secret from the ruthless blogger who is always watching. Teen drama, Sunday's brunch with the elite, designer clothes, exclusive parties, secrets, scams, friends and enemies. Aaand more drama.
Grimm Drama, Fantasy, Horror (2011-2017)
A homicide detective discovers he is a descendant of hunters who fight supernatural forces, the Grimms, charged with keeping balance between humanity and the Wesen, or mythological creatures of the world. Took me like what? A month or two to watch the entire series? Trust me it's good.
iZombie Comedy, Crime, Drama (2015-)
A medical resident finds that being a zombie has its perks, which she uses to assist the police. Won't go into details. Meh, it's not bad, but I started watching it I want to see how it ends.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians Drama, Reality (2007-)
I couldn't not mention this. I know most of you will not watch it, but it's one of my favorites.
Modern Family Comedy, Romance (2009-)
Three different but related families face trials and tribulations in their own uniquely comedic ways. It's sort of funny, 20 something minutes per episode and almost every time there's a life lesson.
Mr. Robot Crime, Drama, Thriller (2015-)
Elliot, a brilliant but highly unstable young cyber-security engineer and vigilante hacker, becomes a key figure in a complex game of global dominance when he and his shadowy allies try to take down the corrupt corporation he works for. Being a software developer it was only natural that I would watch this series. At first I thought it was nice to see all the computer-hacking references and the Easter eggs that computer-muggles would probably not see, but I kinda lost the plot during season 2. At some point I would like to continue watching it.
Pretty Little Liars Drama, Mystery, Romance (2010-2017)
It's about four friends in high school, band together against an anonymous foe ("A") who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, while also investigating the disappearance of their best friend. I used to obsess over this series. It took 7 seasons but we finally got the answer to "who is A". It has a chick flick vibe, 100% would recommend.
Revenge Drama, Mystery, Thriller (2011-2015)
An emotionally troubled young woman makes it her mission to exact revenge against the people who wronged her father. Again, it involves the elite, private parties, secrets, the Hamptons and lots of champagne. Why wouldn't I watch it?
Riverdale Crime, Drama, Mystery (2016-)
A subversive take on Archie and his friends, exploring small town life, the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade. If you've watched it, you already know who is my favorite character (yeap it's Veronica). It started from solving crimes, now we're in a darker-mystery-cannot-describe place.
Royals Drama (2015-)
Drama about a fictional British Royal family set in modern day London, who inhabit a world of opulence and regal tradition that caters to any and every desire, but one that also comes with a price tag of duty, destiny and intense public scrutiny. The Queen is non other than the stunning Elizabeth Hurley, worth watching it just for her.
Santa Clarita Diet Comedy, Horror (2017-)
Joel and Sheila Hammond are everyday suburban real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. The couple face a series of obstacles when Sheila has a physical transformation into a zombie and starts craving human flesh. With Joel and the family trying to help Sheila through the trying time, they have to deal with neighbors, cultural norms and getting to the bottom of a potentially mythological mystery. The only way I can describe it is perfect measure of funny and weird.
Scream Queens Comedy, Horror, Mystery (2015-2016)
A semi-anthology series that centers on returning characters being terrorized by a serial killer in different locations, including a university and a hospital. Also, funny and weird, starring Chanel Oberlin (aka Emma Roberts).
Sex and the City Comedy, Drama, Romance (1998-2004)
I think you're all familiar with Carrie. Four female New Yorkers gossip about their sex lives (or lack thereof) and find new ways to deal with being a woman in the 1990s. I couldn't help but watch it.
Sherlock Crime, Drama, Mystery (2010-)
A modern update finds the famous sleuth and his doctor partner solving crime in 21st century London. It has been a year since the last season, and nobody seems to know if it's coming back.
Stranger Things Drama, Fantasy, Horror (2016-)
Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, the first season focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town, including the appearance of a girl with psychokinetic abilities who helps the missing boy's friends in their own search. How can you still not have watched it?
Supernatural Drama, Fantasy, Horror (2005-)
Saving people, hunting things, the family business since 2005. Two brothers follow their father's footsteps as "hunters", fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds, including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth. If only it could go on forever.
True Blood Drama, Fantasy, Mystery (2008-2014)
The series revolves around Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress living in the rural town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Two years after the invention of a synthetic blood branded “Tru Blood”, vampires are able to "come out of the coffin" and allow their presence to be known to mankind. Now they are struggling for equal rights and assimilation, while anti-vampire organizations begin to gain power. Sookie's world is turned upside down when she falls in love with 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton and for the first time must navigate the trials, tribulations, and terrors of intimacy and relationships. No comments there.
Westworld Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi (2016-)
In an unspecified time in the future, a theme park called Westworld allows guests to experience the American Old West in an environment populated by "hosts", androids programmed to fulfill the guests' every desire. The hosts, who are nearly indistinguishable from humans, follow a predefined set of intertwining narratives but have the ability to deviate from these narratives based on interactions they have with guests.
Phew, that was a long list! Hope you find something interesting to watch. What is a series that you would recommend?
See you soon,
